Itinerary

   Heroes Square

   Meeting point. Cross-shaped plaza, equestrian statue of Bernardo O’Higgins and the setting of the Battle of Rancagua (1814).

2. 2

   Rancagua Cathedral

   The salmon-pink church with two towers facing the square — Parroquia El Sagrario. It is not La Merced: it is the city’s cathedral.

   Independence story

   People, decisions and consequences — not a classroom lecture. You leave knowing why Rancagua matters in Chile’s history.

4. 4

   La Merced Church

   One block north of the square. Shelter for patriot troops in 1814 and a Historic Monument. A different church from the Cathedral.

5. 5

   Colonial houses and Regional Museum

   Colonial architecture and a visit to the Regional Museum (685 Estado Street): Casa del Pilar de Esquina, Casa del Ochavo and 19th-century rooms. Free entry.
